The Biomarkers for Environmental and Climate Science (BECS) research group explores environmental and climate change using compound-specific stable isotope and biomarker analyse approaches, helping to unravel the history of ecosystems and the effects of human activities on our planet.

What we do

The BECS Organic Geochemistry lab investigates environmental and climate processes through the study of isotope and biomarkers in natural archives.

  • Reconstructing past climate and environmental change
  • Tracing carbon cycling in aquatic and terrestrial systems
  • Assessing human and natural impacts on ecosystems
  • Supporting research on sustainability and environmental management

Facilities and equipment

The BECS Organic Geochemistry labs house a range of advanced instrumentation for biomarker and organic matter analysis.

  • The Preparation Laboratory: The wet chemistry laboratory is equipped with the latest technology to facilitate the extraction of lipid biomarkers and their separation into different compound classes and includes individual work stations, including individual hoods, bench-top space, and refrigerators.
